SITUATION

Distribution of the following tool will be through the Automatic Tool Shipment Program.

TOOL INFORMATION

Federal Regulation J1962-On-Board Diagnostics (OBD II) requires all vehicle manufacturers to install a standard diagnostic port in all vehicles. Starting with 6/2000 production E46 vehicles (with M54 engine), the 20 pin BMW diagnostic port (engine compartment) will be deleted.

All diagnostic. coding and programming functions will be incorporated into the OBD II diagnostic port. All other BMW models will incorporate this change in the Fall.

An adapter cable has been developed that connects the 20 pin diagnostic plug (DIS) to the vehicle OBD II diagnostic port. This adapter cable will be sent out shortly to all centers. BMW centers with more than one DIS must place an order (for the additional DIS cable only) through the BMW parts department. After ordering, fax the order information to Bob Lyons @ 201 930 8401. The cable will be released and shipped. Order information must include:

NOTE: This cable will only operate on the DIS. The Modic III was delivered with its own OBD II diagnostic cable which will be activated through Medic software CD 22 (soon to be delivered). Refer to page 2-33 of your Medic III "Operating and Installation Instructions" book for Medic III OBD cable identification.
