Description & Operation: Notes

WARNING: Because of Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system, before any repairs are performed, disconnect and shield battery ground. Because system has ability to retain voltage, remove SIR fuse and disconnect Yellow SIR connector at base of steering column. Wait 15 minutes before beginning service. All connectors used on SIR system use Connector Position Assurance (CPA) clips to ensure connector retention. Even if system is disconnected, use caution when working near steering column.
CAUTION: When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section before disconnecting battery.

There are 2 different cruise control systems used, depending upon model and various option packages, Cruise Control Module (CCM) based cruise control system and Powertrain Control Module (PCM) based cruise control system. Both CCM and PCM cruise control systems operate mechanical linkage to throttle by means of a vacuum operated cruise control servo. Both systems receive inputs from the cruise control engagement switch, brake release switch, vehicle speed sensor and cruise control servo.

CCM/PCM controlled pulse vent solenoid valve and vacuum solenoid valve in cruise control servo are operated to set position of throttle and maintain cruise speed settings during cruise control system operation. To disengage cruise control system, cruise control switch must be in OFF position and/or brake pedal must be depressed to vent vacuum stored in cruise control servo to atmosphere.
