Axle Ratio & Identification

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 1997 Pontiac Firebird, 1997 Chevrolet Camaro, 1996 Pontiac Firebird, 1996 Chevrolet Caprice, and 1996 Chevrolet Camaro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Limited slip differential can be identified by raising vehicle and rotating one rear wheel. With transmission in Neutral, both rear wheels will rotate in same direction if vehicle is equipped with limited slip differential.

The axle may also be identified by axle code. Axle code is stamped on front of right rear axle tube and on tag attached by ring gear cover bolt. Axle code contains axle ratio, ring gear diameter and differential type information. See AXLE RATIO IDENTIFICATION  table.
