Pass-Key(R) III System Auto Learn Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2000 Pontiac Bonneville. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: PASS-Key(R) III system auto learn procedure must be performed if Powertrain Control Module (PCM), ignition lock cylinder, reader/exciter or ignition key are replaced.
  1. Insert a valid mechanical coded unlearned ignition key in the ignition switch. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. The SECURITY indicator light will illuminate for 10 minutes, the length of auto learn timer.
  2. When auto learn timer expires and SECURITY indicator light turns off, turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove ignition key from ignition. Wait 10 seconds.
  3. Repeat steps  1 and  2 two more times. Insert the newly learned ignition key in ignition switch.
  4. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. The SECURITY indicator light should remain off to indicate ignition key was learned. If SECURITY indicator light does not remain off, repeat procedure.
