Powertrain Control Module Diagnostic System Check (LESABRE)

CAUTION: DO NOT perform this test if a driveability concern does not exists. DO NOT turn ignition switch to LOCK position while performing this test. DO NOT clear DTCs unless diagnostic instructs to do so.
CAUTION: Search for applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) before proceeding with diagnosis.
NOTE: If there is a condition with starting system, go to ENGINE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  .
NOTE: Ensure battery is fully charged, battery cables are clean and tight, and Powertrain Control Module (PCM) grounds are clean, tight, and in proper locations.
  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located on lower left side of instrument panel, near steering column. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, go to TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  2. NOTE: If using Tech 2 scan tool, obtain information using CLASS 2 MESSAGE MONITOR feature.
  3. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, attempt to establish communication with the following modules:
    • Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
    • Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD) module.
    • Dash Integration Module (DIM).
    • Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC).
    • Instrument Panel Module (IPM).
    • Head Up Display (HUD).
    • Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SIR).
    • Rear Integration Module (RIM).
    • Radio.
    • Onstar.
    • DRP.
    • Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM).
    • Traction Control System (TCS).
    • Tire Inflation Module (TIM).
    • Driver's Door Module (DDM).

If scan tool communicates with all modules, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with all modules, go to TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS.

  4. Attempt to start engine. If engine starts and idles, go to next step. If engine does not start and idle, repair concern by symptom. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  5. Using scan tool, select DISPLAY DTCs function on scan tool for the following modules:
    • PCM.
    • VTD module.
    • DIM.
    • EBCM.
    • Heater, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) module.
    • IPC.
    • IPM.

If scan tool displays any DTCs, go to next step. If scan tool does not display any DTCs, go to step  9 .

  6. Using scan tool, save or capture PCM DTC information. Store PCM DTC information. When completed, go to next step.
  7. If scan tool does not display any DTCs beginning with "U", go to next step. If scan tool displays any DTCs beginning with "U", go to TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  8. If scan tool does not display DTCs P0601 or P0602, go to next step. If scan tool displays DTCs P0601 or P0602, perform appropriate test. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  9. If scan tool displays DTC P0560, perform appropriate test. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. If scan tool does not display DTC P0560, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  .
  10. If concern is not with automatic transmission, go to next step. If concern is with automatic transmission, go to AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  .
  11. If concern is not with Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) testing, go to next step. If concern is with I/M testing, see appropriate ENGINE PERFORMANCE article.
  12. If concern is a symptom, diagnose and repair by symptom. See appropriate testing in TROUBLE SHOOTING article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
