Steering Wheel Replacement

WARNING:

When performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, the SIR system must be disabled. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling. Failure to observe the correct procedure could cause deployment of the SIR components, personal injury, or unnecessary SIR system repairs.

WARNING:

When replacing either a steering wheel or driver airbag, it is mandatory that both components are sourced from the same country. Parts from different countries are not interchangeable and may cause a malfunction of the air bag system causing personal injury.

Preliminary Procedure Remove the airbag steering wheel module. Refer to Airbag Steering Wheel Module Replacement .
1 Steering Wheel Bolt
CAUTION:

Refer to Fastener Caution .

Procedure

  1. Discard the bolt.
  2. Clean the adjacent bolt threads.
  3. Ensure the new bolt has locking agent applied to the threads. If locking agent is not present, apply locking agent to the bolt threads. Refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers .
  4. Install new bolt.
NOTE:
  • The ONLY acceptable bit for removing and installing the steering wheel bolt is a T50 bit. Do NOT use any other size bit or a worn T50 bit or the bolt recess MAY strip and the bolt may NOT be removable.
  • If a power tool is used to remove the steering wheel bolt, the tool must have a torque rating greater than 75 N.m (55 lb ft) and both the power tool and the T50 bit MUST be positioned perpendicular to the bolt recess.

Tighten 
45 N.m (33 lb ft)
2 Steering Wheel

Procedure

  1. Disconnect any electrical connectors as needed.
  2. Loosen the steering wheel bolt until 2 to 3 threads are left engaged.
  3. Wiggle the steering wheel until the steering wheel disengages completely.
  4. Remove the steering wheel.
  5. Transfer any parts as needed. Refer to Steering Wheel Spoke Lower Cover Replacement 
NOTE:

Before installing the steering wheel, ensure that any debris or OLD adhesive patch is removed from the steering column shaft and the steering wheel mating surfaces.
