Variable Effort Steering Diagnostic System Check

  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, near steering column. See Figure . If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, perform TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  2. Start engine. Using scan tool, attempt to communicate with Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM). If scan tool communicates with EBCM, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with EBCM, perform TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  3. Using scan tool, select DISPLAY DTCs for magnasteer. If scan tool does not display any DTCs for Dynamic Rear Proportioning (DRP)/Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS)/Traction Control System (TCS)/Vehicle Stability Enhancement System (VSES) (if equipped), go to next step. If scan tool displays any DTCs for DRP/ABS/TCS/VSES (if equipped), perform appropriate test in accordance with DTC retrieved. See appropriate ANTI-LOCK article in BRAKES.
  4. Using scan tool, select DISPLAY DTC for magnasteer. If scan tool displays DTCs C1241, perform appropriate test. See appropriate ELECTRONIC article in ELECTRONIC STEERING. If scan tool does not display DTC C1241, repair power steering system by symptom. See appropriate article in STEERING.
