Anti-Lock Brake System Diagnostic System Check

The Diagnostic System Check is an organized approach to identify problems associated with the Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM). This check must be the starting point for any EBCM complaint, and will direct you to the next logical step in diagnosing the complaint. The EBCM is a very reliable component and is not likely the cause of the malfunction. Most system complaints are linked to faulty wiring, connectors, and occasionally to components. Understanding the ABS system and using the tables correctly will reduce diagnostic time and prevent unnecessary parts replacement.

  1. Connect scan tool. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, see TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  2. Turn ignition on. Try to establish communication with Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM), Electronic Suspension Control Module (ESC), Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC), Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and Heater Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC) control module (contained in instrument panel module). If scan tool communicates with all modules listed, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with all modules listed, go to TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  3. Select display DTCs function on scan tool for Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM), Electronic Suspension Control Module (ESC), Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC), Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and Heater Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC) control module. If scan tool displays any DTCs, go to next step. If scan tool does not display any DTCs, see ANTI-LOCK article in BRAKES for further diagnosis.
  4. If scan tool does not display any DTCs that begin with a "U", go to next step. If scan tool displays any DTCs that begin with "U", see TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  5. If scan tool does not display DTC B1000, B1004, B1007, B1009, B1013 or B1014, go to next step. If scan tool displays DTC B1000, B1004, B1007, B1009, B1013 or B1014, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
  6. If scan tool displays DTC B1327, B1513 or B1514, See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS in GENERATORS & REGULATORS - DEVILLE article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. If scan tool does not display DTC B1327, B1513 or B1514, diagnose any other DTCs that are present. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
