Engine Electrical Diagnostic System Check

  1. Perform battery inspection test, see BATTERY TESTING & INSPECTION under ON-VEHICLE TESTING in GENERATORS & REGULATORS - DEVILLE article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS.
  2. Connect scan tool. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, see TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  3. Turn ignition on. Try to communicate with Radio Amplifier (AMP), Dash Integration Module (DIM), Driver's Door Module (DDM), Driver's Door Switch (DDS), Heads Up Display (HUD), Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC), Instrument Panel Module (IPM), Left Rear Door Module (LRDM), Memory Seat Module (MSM), Navigation Display Head (NDH), Navigation Module (NAV), Navigation Radio (NRC), Onstar(R) (ONS), Passenger Door Module (PDM), Radio (IRC), Remote Control Door Lock Receiver (RCDLR), Rear Integration Module (RIM), Right Rear Door Module (RRDM), Powertrain Control Module (PCM), Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR), Tilt Telescope Module (TTM) and Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD) module. If scan tool communicates with all modules listed, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with all modules listed, see TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  4. Select display DTCs function for each module listed in previous step (if using a Tech 2, use CLASS 2 DTC CHECK FEATURE in order to determine which modules have DTCs set). If scan tool displays any DTCs, go to next step. If scan tool does not display any DTCs, see TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - CARS in ENGINE PERFORMANCE for further diagnosis.
  5. If scan tool does not display any DTCs that begin with a "U", go to next step. If scan tool displays any DTCs that begin with "U", see TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  6. If scan tool displays DTC B1000, B1004, B1007 or B1009, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If scan tool does not display DTC B1000, B1004, B1007 or B1009, diagnose any other DTCs that exist. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
