Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Diagnostic System Check

  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, on hood release bracket. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, perform TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, attempt to communicate with Body Control Module (BCM) and Powertrain Control Module (PCM). If scan tool communicates with BCM and PCM, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with BCM and PCM, perform TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  3. Using scan tool, select DISPLAY DTCs functions for BCM and PCM. If scan tool displays any DTCs, go to next step. If scan tool does not display any DTCs, repair shift lock control system as necessary. See appropriate SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEMS - PASSENGER CARS article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS.
  4. If scan tool does not display any DTCs which begin with "U", go to next step. If scan tool displays any DTCs which begin with "U", perform TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  5. If scan tool does not display DTCs B1552, B1556 or B1558, go to next step. If scan tool displays DTCs B1552, B1556 or B1558, perform appropriate test in accordance with DTC retrieved. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  .
  6. If scan tool displays DTCs P1820, P1822, P1823 or P1825, repair automatic transmission electronic controls as necessary. See appropriate ELECTRONIC CONTROLS article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. If scan tool does not display DTCs P1820, P1822, P1823 or P1825, perform appropriate test in accordance with DTC retrieved. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  .
