Section 55 (Engine Controls - System & Component Tests - 2.2L): Introduction

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Sunfire, 2003 Pontiac Grand Am, 2003 Oldsmobile Alero, and 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Testing individual components does not isolate shorts or opens. Perform all voltage tests using a Digital Multi-Meter (DMM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless stated otherwise in test procedure. Use ohmmeter to isolate wiring harness shorts or opens.

Before testing separate components or systems, follow proper workflow. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 2.2L ALERO, CAVALIER, GRAND AM & SUNFIRE - GASOLINE article or DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS (ALTERNATIVE FUELS) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 2.2L CAVALIER - BI-FUEL - CNG/GASOLINE article. If no Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) are present and a no-start condition exists, proceed to NO-START DIAGNOSIS in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES - 2.2L ALERO, CAVALIER, GRAND AM & SUNFIRE article. If no DTCs are present and a driveability condition exists, proceed to TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - 2.2L ALERO, CAVALIER, GRAND AM & SUNFIRE - GASOLINE article or TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - 2.2L CAVALIER - BI-FUEL - CNG/GASOLINE article for diagnosis by symptom (i.e., ROUGH IDLE, ENGINE STALLS, etc.).
