Circuit/System Testing

Tilt Switch Circuit Malfunction

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the tilt switch.
  2. Ignition ON, verify a test lamp illuminates between the B+ circuit terminal B and ground.
    • If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
  3. Verify both scan tool tilt switch parameters are Inactive.
    • Tilt Up Switch - control circuit terminal C
    • Tilt Down Switch - control circuit terminal A
    • If any of the parameters are not the specified value, test the appropriate control circuit terminal for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the MSM.
  4. Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the B+ circuit terminal B and the control circuit terminals listed below. Verify both scan tool tilt switch parameters are Active.
    • Tilt Up Switch - terminal C
    • Tilt Down Switch - terminal A
    • If not the specified value, test the appropriate control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the MSM.
  5. If all circuit test normal, test or replace the tilt switch.

Tilt Actuator Circuit Malfunction

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the tilt actuator.
  2. Install a test lamp between the control circuit terminal A and the control circuit terminal B.
  3. Command the column to tilt up and down using the tilt switch. The test lamp should illuminate with each command.
    • If the test lamp does not illuminate, test both control circuits for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuits test normal, replace the MSM.
  4. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the tilt actuator.
