Installation Procedure

  1. Install the pitman arm if necessary. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement .
  2. Install the steering gear to the vehicle.

    NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice .
    IMPORTANT: Start all of the steering gear bolts by hand and fully seat them before finalizing the torque.
  4. Install the steering gear bolts (1).

    Tighten:  Tighten the bolts to 150 N.m (110 lb ft).

  6. Install the pitman arm to the relay rod.
  7. Install the pitman arm nut (1).

    Tighten:  Tighten the nut to 62 N.m (46 lb ft).

  8. Connect the power steering hoses to the steering gear.

    Tighten:  Tighten the hoses fittings to 32 N.m (24 lb ft).

  9. Connect the steering shaft coupling. Refer to Steering Shaft Coupling Replacement .
  10. Clean any excess fluid from the vehicle and remove the drain pans.
  11. If equipped with a diesel engine, install the left wheelhouse liner. Refer to Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement - Left Side (Chevrolet) or Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement - Left Side (GMC) .
  12. Install the engine shield, if equipped. Refer to Engine Shield Replacement .
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
