Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2007 GMC Sierra and 2007 Chevrolet Silverado. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
    CAUTION: Refer to SIR Caution .
  1. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  2. Remove the steering column shroud. Refer to Steering Column Shroud Replacement .
  3. NOTE: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the SIR coil assembly to become uncentered, which may cause damage to the coil assembly.
  4. Verify the following before removing the supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) coil:
    • The wheels on the vehicle are straight ahead.
    • That J 42640  is installed or the ignition switch is in the LOCK position. See Special Tools .

  6. Disconnect any electrical connectors as needed.
  7. Remove the SIR coil retaining ring (2).
  8. Remove the SIR coil (1) from the steering shaft.
  9. If replacing the SIR coil then discard the old one.
