Installation Procedure

  1. Position the steering gear (1) on the drivetrain and front suspension frame through the left front wheelhouse area.

  3. Secure the steering gear and the power steering gear inlet hose brackets (4) to the drivetrain and front suspension frame using NEW steering gear bolts (3), washers (2) and NEW steering gear nuts (1). The washers can be reused.
  4. CAUTION:

    Refer to Fastener Caution .

  5. Tighten the steering gear bolts (3) to 110 N.m (81 lb ft) + 160 degrees.

  7. Connect the power steering gear inlet hose (2) and power steering gear outlet hose (3) to the steering gear.
  8. Install the power steering gear inlet and outlet hose bolt (1) and tighten to 9 N.m (80 lb in).
  9. Install the stabilizer shaft onto the drivetrain and front suspension frame. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Replacement (GNA, GNB) .
  10. Lower the vehicle until the gap between the frame and body is approximately 12 mm (0.5 in).

  12. Install the drivetrain and front suspension frame reinforcements (3), reinforcement bolts (2) and rear bolts (1).
  13. Tighten the drivetrain and front suspension frame rear bolts (1) to 160 N.m (118 lb ft).
  14. Tighten the drivetrain and front suspension frame reinforcement bolts (2) to 60 N.m (44 lb ft) + 30 degrees.
  15. Tighten the drivetrain and front suspension frame front bolts. Refer to Drivetrain and Front Suspension Frame Replacement .
  16. Remove the jackstands from underneath the vehicle.
  17. Install the exhaust front pipe. Refer to Exhaust Front Pipe Replacement (AWD) , Exhaust Front Pipe Replacement (FWD) .
  18. Install the propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement .
  19. Install the through bolts for the front and rear transmission mounts. Refer to Transmission Front Mount Replacement , and Transmission Rear Mount Replacement (FWD) , Transmission Rear Mount Replacement (AWD) .
  20. NOTE:

    Ensure the steering gear electrical connector is orientated as noted before removal. Failure to install the connector in the correct position will result in the steering wheel being hard to turn at slow speeds.

  21. Connect the steering gear electrical connector.
  22. Connect the lower control arms to the steering knuckles. Refer to Lower Control Arm Replacement (GNB) , Lower Control Arm Replacement (GNA) .
  23. Connect the stabilizer shaft links to the stabilizer shaft. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement (GNA, GNB) .
  24. Connect the steering linkage outer tie rods to the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement .
  25. Remove the engine support fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture .
  26. Connect the intermediate steering shaft to the steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement .
  27. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
  28. Measure and adjust the front toe. Refer to Wheel Alignment - Steering Wheel Angle and/or Front Toe Adjustment .
