Injection Timing
- Drain engine coolant. Remove fan shroud, radiator and coolant recovery bottle.
- Remove upper dust cover. Disconnect necessary lines, hoses and electrical connections. Remove fuel filter at bracket. Remove fuel injection lines.
- Rotate crankshaft until No. 1 piston reaches TDC of compression stroke. Remove upper timing belt cover. Ensure that timing belt is properly tensioned and that timing marks are aligned.
- Remove camshaft cover. Check for alignment of slot on rear of Camshaft-to-Camshaft Cover mounting surface using Alignment Tool (J-29761). Remove tool.
- Remove injector lines. Remove distributor head screw and washer located in center of pump where injection lines connect to pump. Install Static Timing Gauge (J-29763) and set lift at about (.04"91 mm) from plunger. Rotate crankshaft to bring No. 1 piston to 45-60° BTDC. Zero dial indicator.
- The damper pulley has a series of notched lines, 4 on one side, 7 on the other. The 4 lines are used for static timing. Turn crankshaft until 12° position and loosen 2 nuts on injection pump flange.
- If reading is incorrect, turn crankshaft in normal direction. If indicator reading varies from standard reading, hold crankshaft at 12° position and loosen 2 nuts on injection pump flange.
- Move pump until proper indicator reading is reached and tighten nuts. Recheck reading and adjust as required. Install distributor screw and washer in pump. Install cam cover, fuel injection lines and fuel filter. Connect necessary lines, hoses and electrical connectors. Install upper dust cover, coolant bottle, radiator and shroud. Fill with coolant. Adjust idle speed.
