Oxygen Sensor: Description and Operation

The oxygen sensor used in the closed loop emission control system consists of a closed end zirconia sensor mounted in the exhaust manifold. The sensor generates a voltage which varies with the oxygen content in the exhaust gas stream. As oxygen content rises (lean mixture), voltage decreases, and as oxygen content decreases (rich mixture), voltage increases.
