Steering Gear - Manual: Description

The rack and pinion steering system consists of 2 main components, the rack and the pinion. The motion of turning the steering wheel turns the pinion shaft. The pinion shaft has teeth that mesh with the rack gear. This motion moves the rack and inner and outer tie rod assemblies connected to the steering knuckles, which in turn move the wheels.

Wear take-up is provided by an adjustable spring which forces engagement of rack to pinion teeth. The tie rods are threaded and staked to the rack. They contain a spring loaded ball joint, which permits both rocking and rotating tie rod movement.
