Starter Relay Circuit Test
NOTE:
Perform solenoid tests before testing starter relay circuit.
- Locate and remove starter relay from connector. See Figure or Figure . On the Daytona, Dynasty, Fifth Avenue, Imperial, LeBaron Convertible/Coupe and New Yorker, starter relay is located within power distribution center. Turn ignition on. Using voltmeter, check for battery voltage at starter relay connector terminal No. 30. See Figure. If voltage does not exist, repair open in wiring from relay connector to battery.
- If voltage does exist at relay connector terminal No. 30, ensure battery voltage is also at terminal No. 86 when ignition switch is turned to START position and clutch pedal (if M/T equipped) is pushed to floor. If voltage does exist, circuit is good, proceed to step 5).
- If voltage does not exist at relay connector terminal No. 86 and vehicle is A/T equipped, repair open in wiring from ignition switch to relay connector. See appropriate CHASSIS WIRING DIAGRAM in the WIRING DIAGRAMS Section. If vehicle is M/T equipped, unplug wiring connector from clutch pedal mounted interlock switch.
- Connect jumper wire between interlock switch connector terminals. Recheck for voltage at relay connector terminal No. 86 when ignition is turned to START position. See Figure. If voltage exists at terminal No. 86, replace interlock switch on clutch pedal bracket. If voltage does not exist at terminal No. 86, repair wiring between ignition switch and relay connector. See appropriate CHASSIS WIRING DIAGRAM in the WIRING DIAGRAMS Section.
- If voltage does exist at terminal No. 86 in step 2), check ground circuit as follows. If vehicle is M/T equipped, connect voltmeter negative lead to relay connector terminal No. 85. Connect voltmeter positive lead to terminal No. 86. Turn ignition switch to START position and push clutch pedal to floor. If voltmeter reads battery voltage, relay connector ground circuit is good. Replace faulty starter relay. If volt-meter reading is not battery voltage, repair ground wire circuit.
- If vehicle is A/T equipped, connect voltmeter negative lead to terminal No. 85 and connect positive lead to terminal No. 86. Ensure transmission gear select lever is in Park or Neutral. Turn ignition switch to START position. If voltmeter reads battery voltage, ground circuit is good. Ground circuit runs through neutral safety switch on transmission.
- If voltmeter reading indicates a good ground circuit, replace faulty relay. If voltmeter reading is not as specified, check transmission neutral safety switch for loose or damaged connections. Repair or replace neutral safety switch as required.
