Test 51A - Park Brake Engaged

CAUTION: Always turn ignition off prior to disconnecting or connecting any module connector.
NOTE: For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS - 3.0L article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Perform TEST VER-1 after each repair.
  1. If vehicle is equipped with anti-lock brakes, see appropriate ANTI-LOCK article in BRAKES. If vehicle is not equipped with anti-lock brakes, and parking brake is engaged, release parking brake and verify that EVIC monitor does not display PARK BRAKE ENGAGED. If parking brake is not engaged and EVIC monitor displays PARK BRAKE ENGAGED, go to next step.
  2. Using scan tool, read parking brake switch status. Ensure no parking brake lever interference exists. If scan tool displays PRK BRAKE OPEN, go to step 5). If scan tool does not display PRK BRAKE OPEN, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect parking brake switch connector. Check, clean and repair connections as needed. If scan tool displays PRK BRAKE OPEN, replace parking brake switch. If scan tool does not display PRK BRAKE OPEN, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect both Body Control Module (BCM) connectors. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of BCM Natural connector terminal No. 17 (Black/White wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair Black/White wire between parking brake switch connector and BCM Natural connector for short to ground. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace BCM.
  5. Disconnect parking brake switch connector. Connect jumper wire between parking brake switch connector (Black/White wire) and chassis ground. If scan tool does not display PRK BRAKE OPEN, replace parking brake switch. If scan tool displays PRK BRAKE OPEN, go to next step.
  6. Disconnect jumper wire. Gain access to Body Control Module (BCM), located behind right kick panel. With connectors connected, connect jumper wire between BCM Natural connector terminal No. 17 (Black/White wire) and chassis ground. If scan tool displays PRK BRAKE OPEN, replace BCM. If scan tool does not display PRK BRAKE OPEN, repair open Black/White wire between BCM Natural connector and parking brake switch connector.
