Checking Fuel Pressure

WARNING: High fuel pressure may be present in fuel lines. Open fuel system with caution. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE  procedure.
  1. Turn ignition off. Release fuel pressure. Connect fuel pressure gauge to fuel supply line. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, actuate fuel system. If fuel pressure is 43-53 psi (3.0-3.7 kg/cm2 ), go to TEST NTC-3B. If fuel pressure is not 43-53 psi (3.0-3.7 kg/cm2 ), record fuel pressure reading. If pressure is more than 53 psi (3.7 kg/cm2 ), go to TEST NTC-3C . If pressure is less than 43 psi (3.0 kg/cm2 ), go to next step.
  2. If vehicle is a FJ22 body, go to step 5). If vehicle is a JA body, stop fuel system actuation. Turn ignition off. Inspect fuel lines for kinked or restricted lines. Repair fuel lines as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2 .
  3. If no kinked or restricted lines exist, release fuel pressure. Remove fuel pressure gauge. Install fuel pressure gauge between fuel tank and fuel filter. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, actuate fuel system. If fuel pressure is at least 5 psi (0.4 kg/cm2 ) more than previously recorded pressure, replace fuel filter. Perform TEST VER-2.
  4. If fuel pressure is not at least 5 psi (0.4 kg/cm2 ) more than previous reading, stop fuel system actuation. Replace fuel pump and pressure regulator assembly. Perform TEST VER-2.
  5. With scan tool must still be actuating fuel system, gently squeeze fuel return hose while observing fuel pressure gauge. If fuel pressure increases to more than 43 psi (3.0 kg/cm2 ), stop fuel system actuation. Replace fuel pressure regulator. Perform TEST VER-2. If fuel pressure does not increase to more than 43 psi (3.0 kg/cm2 ), turn ignition off.
  6. Inspect fuel supply lines for kinks or restrictions. Repair fuel lines as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2. If no kinked or restricted lines exist, release fuel pressure. Remove fuel filter. Adjust shop air to 40 psi (2.8 kg/cm2 ). Using shop air, attempt to blow air through fuel filter. If fuel filter is restricted, replace fuel filter. Perform TEST VER-2 . If fuel filter is not restricted, replace fuel pump. Perform TEST VER-2.
