Instrument Cluster Test 5A - Identifying Inoperative Gauge

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1998 Dodge Intrepid and 1998 Chrysler Concorde. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Perform INSTRUMENT CLUSTER TEST 1A  before proceeding with this test. For connector terminal identification, refer to CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  . For wiring diagrams, refer to WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Perform, after each repair, VERIFICATION TEST VER-1A - BODY VERIFICATION TEST  .
CAUTION: Always turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting or connecting any module connector.
  1. Turn ignition off. While holding TRIP reset button on instrument cluster, turn ignition to ON position. This will start Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC) self-test. This test actuates gauges through their full range. If each gauge passed the self-test, go to next step. If one or more gauges did not pass self-test, go to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER TEST 10A  .
  2. Cycle ignition switch to stop self-test. Go to appropriate test for malfunctioning gauge. See GAUGE TEST DIRECTORY table. If tachometer is only gauge malfunctioning, go to next step.
  3. Start engine. Using scan tool, read engine RPM. If scan tool displays engine speed above 400 RPM, replace instrument cluster. If scan tool does not display engine speed above 400 RPM, go to TEST 8A  in VEHICLE COMMUNICATIONS.
