DTC P1686: No Skim Bus Message Received: Testing

  1. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, read PCM DTCs. If DTC P1686 is present and STARTS SINCE SET counter is equal to zero, go to next step. If DTC P1686 is not present and STARTS SINCE SET counter is not equal to zero, go to step  4 .
  2. Using scan tool, attempt to communicate with SKIM. If scan tool communicates with SKIM, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with scan tool, go to go to BUS +/- SIGNAL OPEN OR NO RESPONSE FROM SKIM under COMMUNICATIONS under SYSTEM TESTS in BODY CONTROL MODULES - PT CRUISER article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM harness connectors. See Figure . Disconnect SKIM harness connector. SKIM is located on steering column. Measure resistance of PCI bus circuit (Violet/Yellow wire) between terminal No. 2 at SKIM harness connector and terminal No. 59 at PCM C2 harness connector. See Figure and Fig 1 . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in PCI bus circuit.
  4. Turn ignition off. Visually inspect related wiring harness. Check for chafed, pierced, pinched or partially broken wires. Visually inspect related wiring harness connectors. Check for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals. Refer to any Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) that may apply. Perform a wiggle test on related wiring harnesses with engine running. If a problem is found, repair as necessary. If no problems are found, test is complete.
