DTC P1281: Engine Is Cold Too Long: Testing

NOTE: To diagnose this DTC, manufacturer recommends allowing vehicle to sit overnight in order to have a totally cold engine. Extremely cold ambient outside temperatures may have caused this DTC to set. Before proceeding, ensure Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor is operating correctly.

Check coolant level. Add coolant if necessary. Start engine. With DRBIII®, monitor the Engine Coolant Temperature value during the warm up cycle. Make sure the transition of the temperature change is smooth. Did the engine temperature reach a minimum of 160°F (71°C)? If yes, test is complete. If no, repair cooling system as necessary. The most probable cause is a defective thermostat. Also, check for related Technical Service Bulletins (TSB). After repairs, perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-5  under VERIFICATION TESTS to ensure system is functioning properly.
