Piston And Connecting Rod

  1. Remove the engine from the vehicle. See REMOVAL .

  2. Remove the left cylinder head. See INSTALLATION .
  3. Remove the right cylinder head. See REMOVAL .

  4. Remove the lower oil pan. See REMOVAL .

  5. Remove the upper oil pan. See REMOVAL .
  6. Remove top ridge of cylinder bores with a reliable ridge reamer before removing pistons from cylinder block. Be sure to keep tops of pistons covered during this operation. Pistons and connecting rods must be removed from top of cylinder block. When removing piston and connecting rod assemblies from the engine, rotate crankshaft so that each connecting rod is centered in cylinder bore.

  7. Remove the connecting rod bolts (7).
  8. Remove the piston (3) and connecting rods (2) from the cylinder bores.
  9. Inspect connecting rods and connecting rod caps (9) for cylinder identification. Identify them with a paint mark if necessary.
  10. Remove connecting rod cap. Install protectors on connecting rod. Push each piston and rod assembly out of cylinder bore.
NOTE: Be careful not to nick crankshaft journals.
