Measuring Backlash

- Use Backlash Tool (special tool #9682, Backlash Measuring Tool) (1) to check backlash.
- Install Backlash Tool (special tool #9682, Backlash Measuring Tool) (1) into the side gear and tighten the lock down nut. Refer to Fig 2.
- Install Dial Indicator (special tool #C-3339A, Set, Dial Indicator) (2) to the differential cover and align the measuring tip of the Dial Indicator with the line on Backlash Tool (1). Refer to Fig 3.
- Zero the Dial Indicator.
- While holding the pinion flange, rock the measuring arm back and forth stop - to - stop.
- Record the reading on the Dial Indicator.
- To bring backlash with in specifications, subtract from one side and add equal amount of cup shims to the other side of the differential case and the differential cover as needed. (1.34-2.98 mm (0.053-0.117 in.) Available in 0.04 mm (0.0015 in.) increments).
