Steering Columns: Description
CAUTION:
Disconnect negative battery cable before removing or installing any electrical unit or when a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with exposed electrical terminals. Disconnecting this cable will help prevent personal injury and damage to vehicle. The ignition switch must also be in LOCK position unless otherwise noted.
CAUTION:
To ensure energy-absorbing action, it is important to use only specified screws, bolts and nuts tightened to specified torque.
The energy-absorbing column is designed to compress in a front-end collision to lessen chance of driver injury. In addition to steering function, steering column provides safety and security. The ignition switch and lock are mounted on column, allowing ignition and steering operations to be locked to prevent theft of car.
The column levers trigger turn signals, headlight beams and windshield washer and wipers. A tilt steering column uses a spherical joint to allow steering wheel to tilt up and down. This enables driver to adjust steering wheel to a comfortable driving position. The column may be easily disassembled and assembled.
