NS8 - Checking Engine Control Module

  1. With ignition off, connect diagnostic readout tool to engine harness connector. Disconnect ignition coil wire at distributor and place within 1/4" of good engine ground. Unplug 60-way connector from engine control module and connect one end of jumper wire to cavity No. 34. Turn ignition on. Press and hold ATM button on readout tool. Touch other end of jumper to good ground. Make and break this connection several times while observing ignition coil wire.
  2. If there is spark at ignition coil wire as connection is made and broken, logic board is defective. Replace engine control module. If there is no spark at ignition coil wire as connection is made and broken, go to step 3).
NOTE: Before replacing engine control module, ensure that terminal in cavity No. 34 of 60-way connector is not damaged.
  3. Turn ignition off and unplug 60-way connector from engine control module. Remove jumper wire from cavity No. 34 of 60-way connector. Unplug 14-way connector from engine control module. Connect one lead of ohmmeter to cavity No. 34 and connect other lead of ohmmeter to cavity No. 13 of engine control module 14-way connector. If ohmmeter is showing continuity, power board is defective. Replace engine control module. If ohmmeter is not showing continuity, check wire for open circuit. Repair as necessary.
