EGR System Operation Check

  1. Ensure engine is idling at normal operating temperature with parking brake set. With throttle closed and transmission in Neutral, quickly accelerate engine speed to 2000 RPM. Watch for movement on the EGR valve stem.
  2. Connect tachometer to engine and remove vacuum hose from EGR valve. Connect hand vacuum pump to EGR valve. Start engine and apply vacuum to EGR valve. Engine RPM should drop as vacuum reaches 3-5 in. Hg. If engine speed does not drop, EGR valve is defective or intake manifold is restricted. On 2.2L engines, remove and check EGR tube for restriction.
