Fuel Control
An electric fuel pump, located in the fuel tank, supplies fuel to the fuel rail. The fuel pump is an integral part of the fuel gauge sending unit. A fuel pressure regulator mounted on the fuel rail maintains a constant fuel system of 48 psi (8.1 kg/cm2 ) at the fuel injector.
Power to the fuel pump is supplied by the SMEC through the Automatic Shutdown (ASD) relay. When the SMEC senses a distributor reference signal during cranking, it grounds the ASD and closes the contacts. This completes the circuit for the electric fuel pump, injectors, and ignition coil. If the distributor reference signal is lost, the ASD relay shuts off the fuel pump, fuel injectors and ignition coil circuits.
