Description & Operation: Notes

The electronic ignition system features a Hall Effect distributor, engine sensors and a Single Module Engine Controller (SMEC). The SMEC controls entire ignition system. Different engine conditions require changes in timing advance. The SMEC has a built in microprocessor which continually receives input from engine sensors. The SMEC electronically advances or retards ignition timing, providing an infinite number of advance curves.

During cold and warm engine operation, the microprocessor uses some unique advance curves to reduce engine emissions and improve driveability. The amount of advance is determined by coolant temperature, engine RPM, and available manifold vacuum. During the crank/start mode, the SMEC will provide a fixed amount of advanced timing to ensure a quick efficient start.

When no ignition signal is present with ignition in "RUN" position, the auto shutdown (ASD) relay interrupts power to electric fuel pump, fuel injectors, and ignition coil.
