Test 39A - Door Ajar Light Control Circuit

NOTE: For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  . For appropriate wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS  at end of article.
  1. Turn ignition off. With all doors closed, open and close left front door. If courtesy lights do not come on and then fade off, go to TEST 40A. If courtesy lights come on and then fade off, go to next step.
  2. Ensure all doors are properly closed. If door ajar light is inoperative, go to step 3). If door ajar light stays on all the time, disconnect Body Controller Module (BCM) Gray connector. Module is located behind right kick panel. If door ajar light is now off, replace BCM. Perform VERIFICATION PROCEDURE VER-1. If door ajar light remains on, repair short to ground in door ajar light output circuit (Tan wire). Perform VERIFICATION PROCEDURE VER-1.
NOTE: Perform step 3) only if door ajar light is inoperative.
  3. Disconnect message center connector. Connector is located under left side of dash, near instrument cluster connector. Remove and inspect door ajar light bulb at message center. If bulb filament is open, replace door ajar light bulb. Perform VERIFICATION PROCEDURE VER-1.
  4. If door ajar light bulb filament is okay, use DRB-II in voltmeter mode to check voltage on message center connector fused battery feed circuit (Pink wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open circuit in Pink wire between fuse/junction block and message center. Perform VERIFICATION PROCEDURE VER-1.
  5. If voltage is more than 10 volts, turn ignition off. Disconnect BCM Gray connector. With DRB-II in voltmeter mode, check voltage on message center connector door ajar light output circuit (Pink/Black wire). If voltage is more than 10 volts, repair short to battery in Pink/Black wire and replace BCM. Perform VERIFICATION PROCEDURE VER-1.
  6. If voltage is less than 10 volts, use an external ohmmeter to check door ajar light output circuit (Pink/Black wire) resistance between message center connector and terminal No. 9 of BCM Gray connector. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair Pink/Black wire between BCM and message center.
  7. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, inspect circuit board on back of message center. If circuit board is damaged, replace message center. Perform VERIFICATION PROCEDURE VER-1. If circuit board is not damaged, replace BCM. Perform VERIFICATION PROCEDURE VER-1.
