Test 36C - Repairing Liftgate Release Problem

NOTE: For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  in this article. For wiring diagrams, see WIRING DIAGRAMS  in this article.
CAUTION: Always turn ignition off prior to disconnecting or connecting any module connector.
NOTE: Liftgate release will not work if liftgate is open or vehicle is moving. Ensure liftgate mechanical linkage is operating properly before proceeding with test.
  1. Ensure liftgate is closed and vehicle is not moving. Turn ignition on. depress and release liftgate switch. If liftgate solenoid does not operate, go to step 3). If liftgate solenoid operates, go to next step.
  2. If liftgate opened when switch was depressed, liftgate release is operating properly. If liftgate did not open, gain access to liftgate release solenoid. Inspect solenoid and linkage. Repair linkage as necessary. Perform TEST VER-1B  . If linkage is okay, adjust liftgate latch as necessary. Perform TEST VER-1B.
  3. Ensure liftgate is closed. Using DRB, read liftgate ajar switch status. If DRB does not display GATE AJAR: CLOSED, go to TEST 43A  . If DRB displays GATE AJAR: CLOSED, go to next step.
  4. Remove and inspect fuse No. 4 from fuse panel. If fuse is blown, go to TEST 36D. If fuse is okay, go to next step.
  5. Reinstall fuse No. 4. Remove liftgate release relay from relay block. Using DRB in voltmeter mode, check voltage on fused battery supply circuit (Dark Green/Yellow wire) at liftgate release relay connector. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open Dark Green/Yellow wire. Perform TEST VER-1B. If resistance is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
  6. Check voltage on switch output circuit (Yellow/Black wire) at liftgate release relay connector. Depress liftgate release switch while observing DRB voltage. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to step 9). If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to next step.
  7. Disconnect liftgate release switch connector. Check voltage on fused battery supply circuit (Light Green/Black wire) at liftgate release switch connector. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open Light Green/Black wire. Perform TEST VER-1B. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
  8. Connect a jumper wire between fused battery supply circuit (Light Green/Black wire) and switch output circuit (Yellow/Black wire) at liftgate release connector. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open Yellow/black wire. Perform TEST VER-1B. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace liftgate release switch. Perform TEST VER-1B.
  9. Connect a jumper wire between fused battery supply circuit (Dark Green/Yellow wire) and liftgate release relay output circuit (Light Green/Black wire) at liftgate release relay connector. If liftgate release solenoid operated with jumper wire connected, go to step 11). If solenoid did not operate, go to next step.
  10. Disconnect liftgate release solenoid connector. Ensure jumper wire is still connected. Check voltage on fused liftgate release relay output circuit (Light Green/Black wire) at liftgate release solenoid connector. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open Light Green/Yellow wire. Perform TEST VER-1B. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace liftgate release solenoid. Perform TEST VER-1B.
  11. Disconnect jumper wire. Disconnect Blue Body Control Module (BCM) connector. BCM is located behind center console. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance of liftgate release relay control circuit (Brown/Light Blue wire) between liftgate release relay connector and Blue BCM connector terminal No. 18. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open Brown/Light Blue wire. Perform TEST VER-1B. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  12. Reinstall liftgate release relay. Connect a jumper wire between liftgate release relay control circuit (Brown/Light Blue wire) at Blue BCM connector terminal No. 18 and ground. Depress liftgate release switch. If liftgate solenoid does not operate, replace liftgate release relay. Perform TEST VER-1B. If solenoid operates, replace BCM. Perform TEST VER-1B.
