Test 16A - Testing Ambient Temperature Sensor Circuit

CAUTION: Always turn ignition off prior to disconnecting or connecting any module connector.
NOTE: For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  . For appropriate wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS  section at the end of this article. Perform TEST VER-1B after each repair.
  1. Turn ignition on, engine off. If Compass/Mini-Trip Computer (CMTC) screen displays OC, go to step 6). If CMTC screen does not display OC, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect ambient temperature sensor connector, located in front of radiator. If CMTC screen displays OC, replace ambient temperature sensor. If CMTC screen does not display OC, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Gain access to CMTC module connector, located behind overhead console. Disconnect CMTC module connector. Check condition of connector, and clean or repair connector as necessary. If connector is okay, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition on, engine off. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of CMTC module connector terminal No. 9 (Violet/Light Green wire). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair Violet/Light Green wire for short to ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  5. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance between CMTC module connector terminals No. 9 (Violet/Light Green wire) and No. 10 (Black/Light Blue wire). If resistance is less than 100 ohms, repair Violet/Light Green wire shorted to Black/Light Blue wire. If resistance is more than 100 ohms, replace CMTC module.
  6. Disconnect ambient temperature sensor connector, located in front of radiator. Connect a jumper wire between ambient temperature sensor connector terminals No. 1 (Violet/Light Green wire) and No. 2 (Black/Light Blue wire). Go to next step.
  7. Turn ignition on, engine off. If CMTC screen displays SC, replace ambient temperature sensor. If CMTC screen does not display SC, go to next step.
  8. Turn ignition off. Disconnect jumper wire. Gain access to CMTC module connector, located behind overhead console. Disconnect CMTC module connector. Check condition of connector, and clean or repair connector as necessary. If connector is okay, go to next step.
  9. Connect a jumper wire between chassis ground and both ambient temperature sensor connector terminals. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of ambient temperature sensor connector terminal No. 1 (Violet/Light Green wire). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open Violet/Light Green wire. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  10. Ensure jumper wire is still connected. Using scan tool, check resistance of ambient temperature sensor connector terminal No. 2 (Black/Light Blue wire). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open Black/Light Blue wire. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace CMTC module.
