Test 68A - Repairing Liftgate Release Problem

NOTE: For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  . For appropriate wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS  section at the end of this article. Perform TEST VER-1B after each repair.
CAUTION: Always turn ignition off prior to disconnecting or connecting any module connector.
NOTE: Liftgate release will not work if liftgate is open or vehicle is moving. Ensure liftgate mechanical linkage is operating properly before proceeding with test.
  1. Ensure liftgate is closed and vehicle is not moving. Turn ignition on. Press and release liftgate switch. If liftgate solenoid does not operate, go to step 3). If liftgate solenoid operates, go to next step.
  2. If liftgate opened when switch was pressed, liftgate release is operating properly. If liftgate did not open, gain access to liftgate release solenoid. Inspect solenoid and linkage. Repair assembly as necessary. If linkage is okay, adjust liftgate latch as necessary.
  3. Ensure liftgate is closed. Using scan tool, read liftgate ajar switch status. If scan tool does not display GATE AJAR OPEN, go to TEST 29B. If scan tool displays GATE AJAR OPEN, go to next step.
  4. Remove and inspect fuse No. 27 from fuse block. If fuse is open, go to TEST 68B. If fuse is okay, go to next step.
  5. Reinstall fuse No. 27. Remove liftgate release relay from relay block. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage on liftgate release relay connector (Dark Green/Yellow wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open Dark Green/Yellow wire. If resistance is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
  6. Check voltage on liftgate release relay connector (Yellow/Black wire). Press liftgate release switch while observing scan tool voltage. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to step 9). If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to next step.
  7. Disconnect liftgate release switch connector. Check voltage on liftgate release switch connector terminal No. 2 (Dark Green/Yellow wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open Dark Green/Yellow wire. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
  8. Connect a jumper wire between liftgate release switch connector terminals No. 1 (Yellow/Black wire) and No. 2 (Dark Green/Yellow wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open Yellow/Black wire. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace liftgate release switch.
  9. Connect a jumper wire between liftgate release relay connector terminals (Light Green/Black wire and Dark Green/Yellow wire). If liftgate release solenoid operated with jumper wire connected, go to step 11). If solenoid did not operate, go to next step.
  10. Disconnect liftgate release solenoid connector. Ensure jumper wire is still connected. Check voltage on liftgate release solenoid connector (Dark Green/Yellow wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open Dark Green/Yellow wire. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace liftgate release solenoid.
  11. Disconnect jumper wire. Disconnect Body Control Module (BCM) Blue connector. BCM is located behind left side knee panel. Check, clean and repair connections as needed. If connections are okay, go to next step.
  12. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance of Brown/Light Blue wire between liftgate release relay connector and BCM Blue connector terminal No. 9. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open Brown/Light Blue wire. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  13. Reinstall liftgate release relay. Connect a jumper wire between chassis ground and BCM Blue connector terminal No. 9 (Brown/Light Blue wire). Press liftgate release switch. If liftgate solenoid does not operate, replace liftgate release relay. If solenoid operates, replace BCM.
