Test NTC-17A: Checking EVAP System

NOTE: EVAP purge solenoid may also be referred to as EVAP solenoid. For component location, see appropriate THEORY & OPERATION article.
  1. Carefully inspect all vacuum hoses for proper routing and for pinched or plugged hoses from EVAP solenoid to fuel tank. Repair or replace hoses as necessary and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If hoses are okay, go to next step.
  2. Start engine. Allow engine to reach operating temperature. On AB body, go to step 5)  . On all other bodies, Turn engine off, ignition on. Disconnect EVAP solenoid-to-EVAP canister hose. Start engine. If EVAP solenoid allows vacuum to pass through within one minute, go to step 6)  . If EVAP solenoid does not allow vacuum to pass through within one minute, go to next step.
  3. If EVAP solenoid allows vacuum to cycle through intermittently within 90 seconds, replace EVAP solenoid and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If EVAP solenoid does not allow vacuum to cycle through intermittently within 90 seconds, go to next step.
CAUTION: DO NOT use more than 5 psi in following steps.
  4. Turn ignition off. Attempt to blow air through EVAP solenoid-to-canister hose. If air flows, EVAP solenoid and hoses are okay. Test passed. If air does not flow, perform TEST NTC-17B: CHECKING EVAP SYSTEM . Go to next step.
  5. Using scan tool, select ENGINE SYSTEM TESTS menu, then select PURGE VAPORS TEST. Select No. 3. SHORT TERM ADAPTIVE value should change. If value changes, EVAP solenoid and hoses are okay. Test passed. If value does not change, go to next step.
  6. Remove EVAP solenoid and tap it against a clean solid surface. If no foreign material falls out, replace EVAP solenoid and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If no foreign material falls out, go to next step.
  7. On all bodies except AB body, go to next step. On AB body, inspect line from rollover valve. If any liquid fuel exists in line, replace EVAP solenoid and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If no liquid fuel exist in line, go to next step.
  8. Inspect EVAP solenoid-to-EVAP canister hose. If hose is disconnected, ripped or cut, repair as necessary and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If hose is okay, clean hose, replace EVAP solenoid and EVAP canister, and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION .
