Test NTC-25A: Checking Fuel Level Sensor
NOTE:
This test applies to TJ, XJ and ZJ bodies only. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For component location and wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
- Disconnect fuel pump module connector. Inspect connector and terminals for damage. Repair connector and terminals as necessary and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If connector and terminals are okay, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, read fuel level sensor voltage. If voltage is 4.9 volts or less, repair resistance to ground in fuel level sensor signal circuit (Dark Blue/Light Green wire on TJ and XJ bodies; Light Blue/Black wire on ZJ body) and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If voltage is more than 4.9 volts, go to next step.
- Connect a jumper wire between fuel level sensor connector, signal circuit (Dark Blue/Light Green wire on TJ and XJ bodies; Light Blue/Black wire on ZJ body) and sensor ground circuit (Brown/Yellow wire on TJ and XJ bodies; Black/Light Blue wire on ZJ body). Go to next step.
- Using scan tool, read fuel level sensor voltage. If voltage is .09 volt or less, go to step 6) . If voltage is more than .09 volt, go to next step.
- Move jumper wire from fuel level sensor connector, ground circuit (Brown/Yellow wire on TJ and XJ bodies; Black/Light Blue wire on ZJ body) to ground. If voltage is .09 volt or less, repair high resistance in sensor ground circuit and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If voltage is more than .09 volt, repair resistance in sensor signal circuit to PCM and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION .
- Check instrument cluster fuel gauge operation. Perform INSTRUMENT CLUSTER TEST in appropriate BODY CONTROL COMPUTER TESTS article in appropriate lemon-25® ELECTRICAL SERVICE & REPAIR manual. Repair instrument cluster as necessary and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If test passes, replace fuel level sensor and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION .
