Test NTC-25A: Checking Fuel Level Sensor

NOTE: This test applies to TJ, XJ and ZJ bodies only. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For component location and wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
  1. Disconnect fuel pump module connector. Inspect connector and terminals for damage. Repair connector and terminals as necessary and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If connector and terminals are okay, go to next step.
  2. Using scan tool, read fuel level sensor voltage. If voltage is 4.9 volts or less, repair resistance to ground in fuel level sensor signal circuit (Dark Blue/Light Green wire on TJ and XJ bodies; Light Blue/Black wire on ZJ body) and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If voltage is more than 4.9 volts, go to next step.
  3. Connect a jumper wire between fuel level sensor connector, signal circuit (Dark Blue/Light Green wire on TJ and XJ bodies; Light Blue/Black wire on ZJ body) and sensor ground circuit (Brown/Yellow wire on TJ and XJ bodies; Black/Light Blue wire on ZJ body). Go to next step.
  4. Using scan tool, read fuel level sensor voltage. If voltage is .09 volt or less, go to step 6)  . If voltage is more than .09 volt, go to next step.
  5. Move jumper wire from fuel level sensor connector, ground circuit (Brown/Yellow wire on TJ and XJ bodies; Black/Light Blue wire on ZJ body) to ground. If voltage is .09 volt or less, repair high resistance in sensor ground circuit and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If voltage is more than .09 volt, repair resistance in sensor signal circuit to PCM and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION .
  6. Check instrument cluster fuel gauge operation. Perform INSTRUMENT CLUSTER TEST in appropriate BODY CONTROL COMPUTER TESTS article in appropriate lemon-25® ELECTRICAL SERVICE & REPAIR manual. Repair instrument cluster as necessary and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If test passes, replace fuel level sensor and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION .
