Test TC-102A: 1/1 O2 Sensor Slow Response
NOTE:
For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For component location and wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
NOTE:
1/1 Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) is located in upstream position. On models equipped with 2 upstream HO2S, 1/1 HO2S is located in left upstream position.
- Start engine. Check exhaust system for leaks between engine and catalytic converter. Repair exhaust system as necessary and perform TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES . If exhaust system is okay, go to next step.
- Check exhaust for excessive smoke caused by oil or coolant consumption. Repair engine mechanical condition as necessary, replace catalytic converter and HO2S(s), and perform TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES . If engine mechanical condition is okay on AB body, go to step 6) . On all other bodies, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect 1/1 HO2S connector. Inspect connector and terminals for damage. Repair connector and terminals as necessary and perform TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES . If connector and terminals are okay, go to next step.
- Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and 1/1 HO2S connector, sensor ground circuit (Brown/Yellow wire on TJ and XJ bodies; Black/Light Blue wire on all other bodies). If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open sensor ground circuit and perform TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
- Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors. Inspect connectors and terminals for damage. Repair connectors and terminals as necessary and perform TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES . If connectors and terminals are okay, replace 1/1 HO2S and perform TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES .
- Using scan tool, read DTCs. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIPS counter is not displayed or displayed count is not "0", go to step 9) . If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIPS counter is displayed and displayed count is "0", go to next step.
- Ensure 1/1 HO2S connector is connected. Using an external voltmeter connected to ground, backprobe PCM Black connector, 1/1 HO2S signal circuit (Tan/White wire). Perform voltage drop test. If voltage drop reading is not less than 0.1 volt, repair signal circuit for high resistance (poor connection) and perform TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES . If voltage drop reading is less than 0.1 volt, go to next step.
- Backprobe PCM Black connector, sensor ground circuit (Black/Light Blue wire). Perform voltage drop test. If voltage drop is not less than 0.1 volt, repair ground circuit for high resistance (poor connection) and perform TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES . If voltage drop reading is less than 0.1 volt, replace 1/1 HO2S and perform TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES .
- Ensure 1/1 HO2S connector is connected. Using an external voltmeter connected to ground, backprobe PCM Black connector, 1/1 HO2S signal circuit (Tan/White wire). Perform voltage drop test while wiggling wiring harness between 1/1 HO2S and PCM Black connector.
Perform voltage drop test while wiggling wiring harness between 1/1 HO2S and PCM Black connector. If voltage drop is not less than 0.1 volt, repair ground circuit for high resistance (poor connection) and perform TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES . If voltage drop reading is less than 0.1 volt, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, read and record FREEZE FRAME data. Road test vehicle under conditions in FREEZE FRAME data. Using scan tool, read DTCs. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIPS counter is not displayed or displayed count is not "0", condition required to set DTC is not present at this time. Erase DTCs and perform TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES . If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIPS counter is displayed and displayed count is "0", repeat TEST TC-102A: 1/1 O2 SENSOR SLOW RESPONSE .
