Test TC-171C: Governor Pressure Solenoid/Trans Relay Circuits
NOTE:
This test does not apply TJ and XJ bodies. Perform TEST TC-171A: GOVERNOR PRESSURE SOLENOID/TRANS RELAY CIRCUITS before proceeding. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For component location and wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect transmission solenoid connector. Inspect connector and terminals for damage. Repair connector and terminals as necessary and perform TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES on AB body, or TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION on all other bodies. If connector and terminals are okay, go to next step.
- Using an external ohmmeter, check and record resistance between transmission solenoid connector, governor pressure solenoid control circuit (Violet/White wire on BE/BR bodies; Gray/Black wire on DN body; Pink wire on all other bodies) and all other circuits in solenoid connector. If resistance is less than 2.5 ohms between any 2 circuits, repair governor pressure solenoid control circuit for a short to other circuit(s), perform TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES on AB body, or TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION on all other bodies, and go to step 4) . If resistance is 2.5 ohms or more between all circuits, go to next step.
- Drain and remove transmission pan. Disconnect governor pressure solenoid connector. Check resistance across governor pressure solenoid. If resistance is less than 2.5 ohms, replace governor pressure solenoid, perform TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES on AB body, or TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION on all other bodies, and go to next step. If resistance is 2.5 ohms or more, replace transmission solenoid and harness assembly, perform TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES on AB body, or TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION on all other bodies, and go to next step.
- Using scan tool, perform GOV and 3-4 shift test. Select 1st gear and read governor pressure voltage. If voltage is one volt or more, replace PCM and perform TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES on AB body, or TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION on all other bodies. If voltage is less than one volt, test is complete.
