Standard Procedure - Clock Spring Centering

If rotating tape within clock spring is not positioned properly in relation to steering wheel and front wheels, clock spring may fail during use. The clock spring must be centered if it is not known to be properly positioned, or if front wheels were moved from straight-ahead position with clock spring removed during any service procedure.

  1. Turn steering wheel until front wheels are in straight-ahead position before starting centering procedure. Disconnect and isolate battery negative cable. If driver airbag has not been deployed, wait two minutes for system capacitor to discharge before further service.
  2. Remove driver airbag. Remove steering wheel with a Steering Wheel Puller (ST C-3428B). Depress two plastic clock spring auto-locking tabs. See Fig 1 . Keeping locking mechanism disengaged, rotate clock spring rotor clockwise to end of its travel. DO NOT apply excessive force.
  3. From end of clockwise travel, rotate rotor two and one-half turns counterclockwise. The horn wire harness should end up at top, and airbag wire harness at bottom. The front wheels should still be in straightahead position. Install steering wheel being certain to fit flats on hub of steering wheel onto formations on inside of clock spring.
  4. Pull wire harnesses through upper and lower holes in steering wheel hub. Tighten steering wheel nut to 61 N.m (45 ft. lbs.) torque. Be certain not to pinch any of wiring between steering wheel and nut. Install driver airbag.
