Chime Sounds With Driver's Door Open, Key Removed
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2000 Dodge Ram Wagon and 2000 Dodge Ram Van. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST under VERIFICATION TESTS after each repair.
NOTE:
Unless instructed otherwise in test step, reconnect any previously disconnected components and connectors.
- Ensure headlight switch is turned off. Remove ignition key. Using scan tool, read KEY IN IGN CHIME STATE status. If scan tool displays KEY IN IGN CHIME STATE: ON, go to next step. If scan tool does not display KEY IN IGN CHIME STATE: ON, go to step 10.
- Ensure all doors are closed. Ensure all interior lights, including glove box light, are turned off. If any interior lights are on, turn them off, remove light bulbs or disconnect door ajar switches as necessary. Ensure ignition is off and go to next step.
- Disconnect key-in ignition switch connector. Gain access to back of headlight switch, through instrument cluster opening. Remove headlight switch. Disconnect headlight switch connectors. Disconnect ignition switch connector. Disconnect Central Timer Module (CTM) C1 Green connector. Go to next step.
- Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance of key-in ignition switch sense circuit (Light Blue wire) between ground and CTM C1 Green connector terminal No. 9. See Figure. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Light Blue wire. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
- Ensure ignition key is removed. Disconnect C201 connector. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between C201 Black connector terminals B3, driver's door ajar switch sense circuit (Black/White wire) and B4, key-in ignition switch sense circuit (Light Blue wire). See Figure. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, replace ignition switch. If resistance is 10 ohms or more, go to next step.
- Gain access to back of headlight switch, through instrument cluster opening. Disconnect key-in ignition switch connector. Open driver's door. Turn headlight switch on. Go to next step.
- Using scan tool, monitor KEY IN IGN CHIME STATE status. Remove headlight switch. While observing scan tool display, disconnect headlight switch connectors. If KEY IN IGN CHIME STATE status changes from ON to OFF, replace headlight switch. If KEY IN IGN CHIME STATE status does not change, go to next step.
- Ensure headlight switch is on. Ensure driver's door is open. Using scan tool, read IGNITION CHIME STATE and DR DOOR AJAR SW status. If scan tool displays DR DOOR AJAR SW: CLOSED and CHIME STATUS: ON, go to step 10. If scan tool does not display DR DOOR AJAR SW: CLOSED and CHIME STATUS: ON, go to next step.
- Disconnect headlight switch connectors. Turn headlight switch on. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance across headlight switch (component side) terminals B3 and "U". See Figure. If resistance is more than one ohm, replace headlight switch. If resistance is one ohm or less, go to next step.
- Ensure headlight switch is not turned all the way counterclockwise. Ensure all doors are closed and courtesy/dome lights are off. Ensure no gauge HI/LO warnings or warning light conditions exist. Turn ignition on, wait 10 seconds and go to next step.
- Remove instrument cluster. See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - RAM VAN & RAM WAGON article. Disconnect instrument cluster connectors. If chime stops, replace instrument cluster. If chime does not stop, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect CTM C1 Green connector. Disconnect instrument cluster C2 Blue connector. Using external ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and instrument cluster C2 connector terminal No. 4, tone request signal circuit (Dark Blue/Red wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Dark Blue/Red wire. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace CTM.
