PRNDL Switch Circuit Shorted
- Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC), under lower left side of instrument panel. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, erase DTCs. Turn ignition off, then on. Using scan tool, select BODY, ELECTRO/MECH CLUSTER, then DTCS. If scan tool displays PRNDL SWITCH CIRCUIT SHORTED, go to next step. If scan tool does not display PRNDL SWITCH CIRCUIT SHORTED, problem is intermittent. Visually inspect and wiggle test related wiring.
- Disconnect instrument cluster connectors. See Figure . Disconnect Black 6-pin transmission range sensor connector, located on left side of transmission. Using DVOM, measure resistance between ground and Black 6-pin transmission range sensor connector terminal No. 2 (White/Light Green wire) and No. 5 (Dark Green/Gray wire). If resistance is more than 5 ohms on both circuits, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less on either circuit, repair short to ground in appropriate wire between Black 6-pin transmission range sensor connector and instrument cluster.
- Using DVOM, measure resistance of transmission range sensor between terminals No. 2 and 5. Compare results with TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR RESISTANCE table. Using DVOM, measure resistance between transmission range sensor terminal No. 6 and transmission case while in Park or Neutral. Less than 5 ohms should exist. If resistance is not as specified, replace transmission range sensor. See TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is as specified, go to next step.
- Replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
