Front Wiper Intermittent Inoperative

  1. Check fuse No. 5 (20-amp) located in instrument panel junction block. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS  . If fuse No. 5 is okay, go to next step. If fuse No. 5 is blown, check for short to ground in Dark Blue wire between Brown 11-pin instrument panel junction block connector C8 terminal No. 6 and Gray 20-pin multifunction switch connector terminal No. 18. See Figure and Figure . Check for short to ground in Dark Blue wires between front wiper relay and Blue 15-pin instrument panel junction block connector C2 terminals No. 4 and 6. See Figure . Check for short to ground in Dark Blue wire between Blue 15-pin instrument panel junction block connector C2 terminal No. 5 and Black 6-pin front wiper motor connector terminal No. 1. See Figure . See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. Repair as necessary.
  2. Turn ignition off. Remove front wiper relay from power distribution center, located in left side of engine compartment, near battery. See Figure . Substitute front wiper relay with a known-good relay. Turn ignition on. Operate front wiper system in intermittent mode. If front wiper intermittent mode works properly, replace front wiper relay. If front wiper intermittent mode does not operate properly, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Black 6-pin front wiper motor connector. Using test light connected to ground, probe Black 6-pin front wiper motor connector terminal No. 1 (Dark Blue wire). See Figure . Turn ignition on. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, repair open in Dark Blue wire between Blue 15-pin instrument panel junction block connector C2 terminal No. 5 and Black 6-pin front wiper motor connector terminal No. 1. See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
  4. Remove front wiper relay. Using test light connected to ground, probe front wiper relay cavities No. 86 and 87 (Dark Blue wires). If test light illuminates at both cavities, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate at both cavities, repair open in appropriate Dark Blue wire between front wiper relay and Blue 15-pin instrument panel junction block connector C2. See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Gray 20-pin multifunction switch connector. See Figure . Set front wiper switch to intermittent position. Using DVOM, measure resistance of front wiper switch between terminals No. 2 and 18. See Figure . If resistance is 2500-20,000 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 2500-20,000 ohms, replace multifunction switch. See MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  6. Ensure front wiper switch is set to intermittent position. Using DVOM, measure resistance of front wiper switch between terminals No. 4 and 18. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace multifunction switch. See MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  7. Ensure front wiper switch is set to intermittent position. Using DVOM, measure resistance of front wiper switch between terminals No. 14 and 17. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace multifunction switch. See MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  8. Disconnect Central Timer Module (CTM) connectors. CTM is located behind left side kick panel. Using DVOM, measure resistance of Dark Green/Red wire between Gray 20-pin multifunction switch connector terminal No. 4 and Gray 26-pin CTM connector C1 terminal No. 8. See Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Dark Green/Red wire between Gray 20-pin multifunction switch connector terminal No. 4 and Gray 26-pin CTM connector C1 terminal No. 8.
  9. Using DVOM, measure resistance of White wire between Gray 20-pin multifunction switch connector terminal No. 2 and Gray 26-pin CTM connector C1 terminal No. 13. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in White wire between Gray 20-pin multifunction switch connector terminal No. 2 and Gray 26-pin CTM connector C1 terminal No. 13.
  10. Using DVOM, measure resistance of Violet wire between Black 6-pin front wiper motor connector terminal No. 5 and Gray 20-pin multifunction switch connector terminals No. 15 and 17. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Violet wire between Black 6-pin front wiper motor connector terminal No. 5 and Gray 20-pin multifunction switch connector terminals No. 15 and 17.
  11. Using DVOM, measure resistance of Red/Black wire between Gray 20-pin multifunction switch connector terminal No. 14 and front wiper relay cavity No. 30. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Red/Black wire between Gray 20-pin multifunction switch connector terminals No. 14 and front wiper relay cavity No. 30.
  12. Using DVOM, measure resistance of White wire between ground and Gray 26-pin CTM connector C1 terminal No. 13. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair short to ground in White wire between Gray 20-pin multifunction switch connector terminal No. 2 and Gray 26-pin CTM connector C1 terminal No. 13.
  13. Using DVOM, measure voltage at Gray 26-pin CTM connector C1 terminal No. 13 (White wire). If no voltage exists, go to next step. If any voltage exists, repair short to voltage in White wire between Gray 20-pin multifunction switch connector terminal No. 2 and Gray 26-pin CTM connector C1 terminal No. 13.
  14. Using DVOM, measure resistance of Yellow/Dark Green wire between Gray 12-pin CTM connector C3 terminal No. 7 and wiper relay cavity No. 85. See Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Yellow/Dark Green wire between Gray 12-pin CTM connector C3 terminal No. 7 and front wiper relay cavity No. 85.
  15. Replace CTM. See CENTRAL TIMER MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
