DTC P1698: No Bus Message From Trans Control Module: Testing

  1. Turn the ignition on, with the engine off. With the DRBIII®, erase DTCs. Perform several ignition cycles (key on/key off) leaving key on each time for 20 seconds. With the DRBIII®, read DTCs. Does the DTC reset? If yes, go to next step. If no, see Intermittent Failures  under ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS.
  2. CAUTION: DO NOT probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal-to-pin connection. Install Miller Special Tool (8815) to perform diagnosis.
  3. Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the PCM harness connectors. With a 12-volt test light connected to ground, probe the Fused Ignition Switch Output circuit (for PCM harness connector C1 terminal No. 12) at the appropriate terminal in the Miller Special Tool. Perform this step with the ignition off (LOCK position), ignition on with the engine off, and during cranking. Wiggle the related wire harness while probing the special tool with the test light to try to interrupt the circuit. Does the test light illuminate brightly? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair the open or excessive resistance in the Fused Ignition Switch Output circuit. Inspect the related fuse. If the fuse is open, check the circuit for a short to ground.
  4. NOTE: Determine which control modules this vehicle is equipped with before proceeding. See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT and WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
NOTE: When attempting to communicate with the remaining control modules on this vehicle, the DRBIII® will display one of 2 different communications errors: NO RESPONSE message or BUS +/- SIGNALS OPEN message.
  5. Turn the ignition on, with the engine off. With the DRBIII®, attempt to communicate with the remaining control modules. Can the DRBIII® communicate with one or more modules? If yes, replace the PCM. If no, perform the PCI BUS COMMUNICATION FAILURE system test in the appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
