Radiator Fan Operation

NOTE: For circuit identification and wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article. After each repair procedure has been completed, reconnect all components. Perform TEST VER-2: POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION  under VERIFICATION TESTS to ensure system is functioning properly.
  1. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, actuate RADIATOR FAN RELAY. Check radiator fan operation. If radiator fan cycles on and off, no problem is indicated at this time. Test is complete. If radiator fan does not cycle on and off, go to next step.
  2. Ensure radiator fan relay is still actuated. Using a 12-volt test light connected to ground, backprobe Light Green wire at radiator fan motor harness connector terminal No. 1. If test light flashes on and off, go to next step. If test light does not flash on and off, go to step  5.
  3. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between ground and Black wire at radiator fan motor harness connector terminal No. 2. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black wire between radiator fan motor and ground connection. Ground connection is located at right front corner of engine compartment, rear of right headlight assembly.
  4. At this time, radiator fan motor is assumed to be defective. Replace radiator fan motor.
  5. Turn ignition off. Remove radiator fan relay from Power Distribution Center (PDC). PDC is located in engine compartment, near battery. Measure voltage of fused battery (+) output circuit (Dark Blue/Orange wire) between ground and radiator fan relay cavity No. 30. For radiator fan relay terminal location, refer to relay cavity numbers in illustration. See Figure or Figure . If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check for open in Dark Blue/Orange wire between PDC and radiator fan relay, or for blown fuse No. 15 (50-amp) in PDC. Repair wiring or replace fuse as necessary. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
  6. Measure resistance of Light Green wire between radiator fan relay cavity No. 87 and radiator fan motor harness connector terminal No. 1. See Figure or Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Dark Green wire between radiator fan relay and radiator fan motor. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
  7. At this time, radiator fan relay is assumed to be defective. Replace radiator fan relay.
