Start & Stall Condition: Testing

  1. Turn the ignition on, with the engine not running. Using DRB-III(R), check for DTCs. Are any DTCs present? If no, go to next step. If yes, perform appropriate diagnostic test. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - DAKOTA, SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - DURANGO - JTEC, or SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - DURANGO - NGC article.
  2. Using the DRB-III(R), attempt to communicate with the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM). If DRB-III(R) cannot communicate with the SKIM, perform BUS +/- SIGNAL OPEN FROM SKIM system test in the appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If DRB-III(R) communicates with the SKIM, use DRB-III(R) to check for SKIM DTCs. Are any DTCs present in the SKIM? If yes, repair all SKIM DTCs. See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If no, go to next step.
  3. Turn the ignition on, with the engine not running. Using DRB-III(R), monitor TP sensor voltage while slowly depressing throttle pedal from idle position to wide open throttle position. Is the voltage change smooth? If yes, go to next step. If no, replace the TP sensor. See Figure , Figure or Figure .
  4. Ensure throttle is fully closed and against throttle stop. Using DRB-III(R), read TP sensor voltage. Is voltage is 0.92 volt or less? If yes, go to next step. If no, check for binding throttle linkage. Repair linkage as necessary. If linkage is not binding, replace the TP sensor.
  5. NOTE: For this test to be valid, the thermostat must be functioning properly. This test works best if performed on an engine that was allowed to sit overnight (cold soak).
  6. If the engine was allowed to sit overnight (cold soak), the temperature value should be a sensible value that is somewhere close to the surrounding temperature (ambient temperature). Using DRB-III(R), read Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor value. If engine coolant temperature is more than 180°F (82.2°C), allow engine coolant temperature to cool down to 150°F (65.6°C) before proceeding. If engine coolant temperature is 150°F (65.6°C) or less, start engine and monitor DRB-III(R) until engine coolant temperature reaches 180°F (82.2°C). Does the ECT sensor value increase smoothly and did it reach at least 180°F (82°C)? If yes, go to next step. If no, replace the ECT sensor.
  7. Check the following additional items as possible causes for start and stall condition:
    • Check for any technical service bulletins that may apply.
    • Engine exhaust system must be free of restrictions.
    • Ensure engine compression is within specification. See COMPRESSION SPECIFICATIONS  table.
    • Ensure engine exhaust system is free of restrictions and/or leaks.
    • Engine must be free of vacuum leaks.
    • Ensure throttle body is free of carbon build-up and dirt.

    Were any of the above conditions present? If yes, repair as necessary. If no, test is complete.

  8. Verify the fuel tank is not empty before continuing. Perform fuel system tests. See FUEL SYSTEMS  . Was the no-start condition solved after performing fuel system tests? If yes, test is complete. If no, check for contamination/water in fuel, and ensure fuel being used in vehicle meets manufacturer's fuel requirement.
