Fuel Pump Amperage Test
NOTE:
This test is written specifically for Chrysler's Diagnostic Readout Box (DRB-III(R)) scan tool. A generic scan tool may not be capable of performing all necessary test functions.
NOTE:
Perform FUEL PUMP VOLUME TEST
, FUEL PUMP PRESSURE TEST
and FUEL PRESSURE LEAKDOWN TEST
before performing FUEL PUMP AMPERAGE TEST. After each repair procedure has been completed, reconnect all components.
- Ensure fuel tank temperature is more than 50°F (10°C). Connect Low Current Shunt (LCS) adapter to DRB-III(R). See Fig 1 . Connect DRB-III(R) to Data Link Connector (DLC). Connect test lead cables into positive (10A) and common (-) connectors on LCS. Access MAIN MENU on DRB-III(R). Press DVOM button.
- Use left/right arrow keys to highlight CHANNEL 1 function on DRB-III(R). Press ENTER 3 times. Use up/down arrow keys to high light RANGE on DRB-III(R). Press ENTER to change from 2-amp scale to 10-amp scale. Remove Power Distribution Center (PDC) cover and remove fuel pump relay. PDC is located at driver's side front corner of engine compartment, near battery. See Figure
and Figure
or Figure
. Attach test leads from LCS adapter into PDC relay cavities No. 30 and 87.
Fuel pump will be operated when LCS adapter leads are connected to relay cavities. Read fuel pump amperage from DRB-III(R) screen. Disconnect test leads from PDC relay cavities immediately after testing. Amperage should be less than 10 amps. If amperage is 10 amps or more, replace fuel pump module assembly. If amperage is less than 10 amps and FUEL PUMP PRESSURE, FUEL PUMP VOLUME and FUEL PRESSURE LEAK DOWN test readings are okay, fuel pump module is okay.
CAUTION:
Changing DRB-III(R) from 2-amp to 10-amp scale must be done to avoid damage to DRB-III(R) or LCS adapter.
