Transfer Case Verification Test
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Dodge Dakota. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION:
If front and rear wheels are at different speeds and a transfer case shift is requested, damage to transfer case may result.
- Disconnect all jumper wires. Reconnect all previously disconnected components and connectors.
- Connect DRBIII(R) to DLC. Using the DRBIII(R), erase DTCs. Ensure all accessories are off and battery is fully charged. Rotate transfer case selector switch to desired position. Test drive vehicle in all transfer case ranges and ensure that it is functioning properly in each of the ranges selected.
- Press recessed Neutral button on transfer case select switch (if equipped) until Neutral indicator is illuminated. To verify transfer case is in Neutral, move shift lever to Reverse (automatic transmission) and release the brake pedal for 3 seconds or move shift lever into any gear (manual transmission) and slowly release the clutch to ensure there is no vehicle movement.
- Using the DRBIII(R), read DTCs. If no DTCs exist, repair is complete. If any DTCs or symptoms remain, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS and/or SYMPTOM IDENTIFICATION .
NOTE:
To select or deselect 2WD/4WD mode or 4HI mode, the vehicle must be at less than 55 MPH and all wheels at vehicle speed. To select or deselect 4LO (if equipped), vehicle must be at less than 3 MPH or completely stopped with ignition on and shift lever in Neutral (automatic transmission) or clutch pedal depressed (manual transmission).
WARNING:
Apply parking brake. Vehicle may roll with the transfer case in Neutral.
NOTE:
To select or deselect transfer case Neutral, vehicle must be stopped with ignition on and engine off, brake pedal applied and shift lever in Neutral (automatic transmission) or clutch pedal depressed (manual transmission).
