Description & Operation: Notes

WARNING: Vehicles are equipped with air bag supplemental restraint system. Before attempting any repairs involving steering column, instrument panel or related components, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS.
CAUTION: When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.

The body system consists of a combination of modules that communicate over the PCI Bus (Programmable Communication Interface multiplex system). The Central Timer Module (CTM) performs most of the typical functions that a Body Control Module (BCM) would perform. Through the PCI Bus, information about the operation of vehicle components and circuits is relayed quickly to the appropriate module(s). All modules receive all the information transmitted on the bus even though a module may not require all information to perform its function. It will only respond to messages addressed to it through a binary coding process. This method of data transmission significantly reduces the complexity of the wiring in the vehicle and the size of wiring harnesses.

All of the information about the functioning of all the systems is organized, controlled, and communicated by the PCI Bus. See VEHICLE COMMUNICATION  . Communication over the bus circuit is essential to proper operation of vehicle's on-board diagnostic systems and Chrysler's Diagnostic Readout Box (DRBIII(R)) or generic scan tool. Problems with operation of PCI Bus circuit or scan tool must be corrected before proceeding with diagnostic testing. If PCI Bus DTCs are stored, go to appropriate procedure for displayed DTC. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . If no PCI Bus DTCs are stored, diagnose by symptom. See SYMPTOM IDENTIFICATION  .

The vehicle modules/systems that are part of the body system are: A/C-Heater System, Air Bag Control Module (ACM)/Air Bag System, Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS)/Controller Anti-Lock Brake (CAB), Audio System (amplifier on premium systems), CTM, Chimes System, Compass Mini-Trip Computer (CMTC) or Overhead Console, Data Link Connector (DLC), Diagnostic Junction Port Connector, Door Ajar System, Electrically Heated System, Electro-Mechanical Instrument Cluster (EMIC), Exterior Lighting System, Interior Lighting System, Power Door Locks/Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) System, Powertrain Control Module (PCM), Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM)/Sentry Key Immobilizer System (SKIS), Transfer Case Control Module (TCCM), Transmission Control Module (TCM), Vehicle Communication System, Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS) and Windshield Wiper/Washer System.
