PCV System (3.9L & 5.9L)

  1. Start engine and allow it to idle. With PCV hose attached to PCV Valve, remove PCV Valve from PCV grommet on Valve Cover. If PCV Valve is not plugged, a hissing noise will be heard as air passes through the PCV Valve and a strong vacuum should be felt at the PCV Valve inlet.
  2. Reinstall PCV Valve. Remove fitting and hose from opposite Valve Cover grommet. Loosely hold a stiff piece of paper over grommet opening. The paper should be drawn against the grommet opening after about one minute, to allow crankcase pressure to reduce.
  3. Turn engine off. Remove PCV Valve. Shake PCV Valve. PCV Valve should rattle when shaken.
  4. CAUTION: DO NOT attempt to clean old PCV Valve. If it is necessary to clean the Valve Cover fitting, use a 1/4" or smaller drill bit turned by hand to avoid removing any metal from the fitting, and then blow out with shop air.
  5. If PCV system does not operate as described in previous steps, replace PCV Valve. Remove fitting and hose from Valve Cover grommet opposite from the PCV Valve grommet. Loosely hold a stiff piece of paper over grommet opening. The paper should be drawn against the grommet opening after about one minute, to allow crankcase pressure to reduce. If paper is not held against grommet, check PCV hose, fitting and intake manifold passage for restrictions. Clean or replace as necessary.
